Driver monitoring in use on Metroline buses

Greenroad Technologies : 30 July, 2008  (Application Story)
Driver feedback system and monitoring tool improves road safety on Metroline fleet of public transport vehicles
GreenRoad Technologies has announced that Metroline is the first UK bus company to deploy GreenRoad Safety Center in its fleet. The technology is installed in more than 100 buses based at its Perivale garage in West London.

GreenRoad Safety Center rates driving skills without invading the driver’s privacy. An in-vehicle sensor collects information on up to 120 different driving manoeuvres. These are constantly analysed to give the driver feedback about their driving and the areas that need improvement. Individual drivers receive instant feedback from a small display on the dashboard. The driver and the fleet manager have access to more detailed analysis of driving skills and recommendations for improvement through a password-protected web site.

Safety Center assists Metroline in its target of improving passengers’ experience by providing a safer, smoother and more comfortable ride. It should also help with lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions in line with the company’s Environmental Policy.

All 300 Metroline drivers based at the Perivale depot are now using Safety Center, with support from Unite, the drivers’ union. Safety Center focuses on how they drive and provides them with real-time training to enhance their professional skills. Metroline is reinforcing this message by creating an incentive programme that rewards the safest drivers.

“We have always been proud of our drivers and their safety record, but with GreenRoad giving our drivers continuous feedback on their driving skills, we are confident that passengers will experience a safer and more comfortable ride” said Neil Colston, Head of Recruitment & Training at Metroline.

“We also expect that our drivers will use less fuel, helping with our corporate objective of cutting fuel costs and reducing our carbon footprint,” continued Colston.

GreenRoad clients have reduced accidents by an average of 54%, lowered accident repair costs by an average of 49% and decreased fuel costs by an average of 7%.

“As the first bus operator to install Safety Center, Metroline is demonstrating that it is a leader in its field,” said Aidan Rowsome, vice president, GreenRoad EMEA. “It’s a win, win situation for everyone involved. Passengers benefit from a more comfortable ride, drivers are rewarded with incentives as their performance improves and Metroline increases quality of service and fuel economy.”
