Door Supervisor Training Linked to SIA Licence

Security Industry Authority : 02 June, 2010  (Company News)
The Security Industry Authority launches licence linked qualifications based on updated training practices for door supervisors in the UK
New licence-linked qualifications for door supervisors are being introduced by training providers across the UK from today. The qualifications bring the training up to date and introduce a modular structure.

Significant additions have been made to the training for door supervisors to reflect up to date working practices. This includes practical assessment of physical intervention skills so that the door supervisor is aware of non-pain techniques that can be used in escorting or disengaging from customers where this becomes necessary. Awareness of terrorist threats, awareness of first aid, and specific considerations when dealing with 14 to 18-year-olds are also included.

The new structure, with core plus specialist modules, means less overlap and duplication in content across the sectors. This makes it easier to get qualified to obtain more than one licence, as just the relevant and required training needs to be taken for each additional qualification.

The new requirements specified by the SIA follow an industry-led review of the training content. The new specifications reflect current industry best practice so that individuals working in the security sectors undergo good and relevant basic training. New SIA licence-linked qualifications were introduced for operatives in the other security sectors across England, Wales and Northern Ireland in January 2010, and will be available in Scotland from September.

Hazel Russell, SIA director of Strategy and Corporate Services, said: "The introduction of the new door supervision qualifications today follows the roll-out earlier this year of the new training for the other sectors of the security industry.

"The changes to the door supervision specification reflects the changes to best practice evident in this sector over the past few years. With significant and valuable input from those working in this sector, we have developed the new requirements in our aim to ensure that door supervisors are best equipped for the challenges they face in their role."

All applicants now applying for an SIA licence for the first time must hold either the new qualification; or a current qualification that is less than three years old.

There are currently no further training requirements for any existing licence holders who wish to renew their licence. However, because of the changes to the door supervision qualification, there may at a future date be a need for a short 'top-up' training session for this sector. This proposal has already been subject to public consultation and if it is introduced will not be a requirement until summer 2011 at the earliest.
