Detica Calls For Private Sector Involvement In Counteracting Fraud Against Public Sector

In response to an interim report from the Counter Fraud Taskforce, Detica is advising the UK Government to seek greater levels of involvement from the private sector
Detica Calls For Private Sector Involvement In Counteracting Fraud Against Public Sector
Following the publication of the Government’s Cabinet Office Counter Fraud Taskforce Interim Report, information intelligence experts BAE Systems Detica have highlighted the importance of drawing on private sector counter fraud experience to end the ‘pay first, check later’ culture as more local and central Government services are brought online.

The National Fraud Authority estimates that 55% of fraud – a massive £21.2bn – is committed against the public sector each year.  According to Detica, as Government increasingly takes its services online – for example, with the introduction of Universal Credits – exposure to cyber threats, opportunistic and organised fraud will increase.

Vicki Chauhan, Director, Government Practice at Detica said: “At a time when the Government is looking to press on swiftly with its public sector cost-cutting and efficiency measures, it’s difficult to ignore the £21 billion hole in our public finances caused by fraud. Today’s Counter Fraud Taskforce report points the way towards more effective prevention and enforcement.

"Detica advises that to fight fraud it is important to get under the skin of fraudsters and gain greater insight into their criminal behaviour. Using the powerful combination of data and innovative technology, Government can protect itself and its citizens from fraud.

“As Government increasingly takes its services online, it will be important that criminal behaviour is better understood – drawing on expertise and existing data from across sectors can spot suspicious activity early on and successfully prevent fraud before it occurs.

"As the Government’s report rightly points out – prevention is better than cure. Being able to assess the risk of an application for a benefit, or a request for a tax rebate in real-time is the nirvana for both great citizen service and effective fraud prevention. This is the norm within industries such as banking and insurance, and will ensure that public sector investigators don’t waste time and money investigating false positives.”

Detica is attending and speaking at the ‘Tackling Fraud and Error across the Public Sector’ conference in central London.  The conference aims to help public sector leaders and policy makers better understand the scale and nature of fraud in the public sector.
