DDoS Protection for Online Perfume Supplier

Prolexic Technologies : 26 February, 2010  (Application Story)
ValentinePerfume has chosen to protect its online presence using Prolexic's service for mitigating Distributed Denial of Service attacks
Online perfume retailer, ValentinePerfume.Com has selected the global leader in managed Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection, Prolexic Technologies to protect its Internet business from DDoS attacks. The decision came after the web site suffered a three day attack prior to Christmas, which would have proven disastrous for the business without Prolexic's ability to rapidly deploy its service and successfully mitigate the DDoS attacks.

The DDoS attack on ValentinePerfume.com lasted for three days and led to a loss of approximately 11 per cent in revenue for November and December. Attempts by the company's IT team to mitigate it were unsuccessful, so they contacted Prolexic who, through the deployment of its 'in the cloud' mitigation service via emergency provisioning was able to stop the attack and return ValentinePerfume.com to normal service within 30 minutes. Service has been uninterrupted since then.

ValentinePerfume.Com was created in 2007 to provide consumers with access to the largest inventory of genuine, brand name fragrances at low prices. The company is purely web-based, relying on the web for 100 per cent of its customer transactions. Company director, Jeet Rajwani realized the web site was under attack when the network received a dramatic increase in spam emails and performance slowed until it finally went down. He said:

"Business stopped completely which over several days cost us dearly. A network attack at any time of the year is extremely difficult for a business to deal with. For us in December, with the run up to Christmas, it could have been crippling. The longer we were offline, the more customers we were losing. When Prolexic stepped in, our business was literally saved."

Gus Cunningham, CEO, Prolexic, said: "DDoS has a real sting in its tail when targeted at online retailers in the run up to Christmas. Shoppers are visiting web sites to purchase gifts, and if unable to gain access they will move on to alternative sites and may never return. It is difficult to track the source of these attacks, but given the timing and nature of the attack to Valentine Perfume, we suspect the motivations behind it may have been related to competition."
