Data loss prevention at Camden Council

Check Point : 18 August, 2009  (Application Story)
Check Point is providing London Council with full disk encryption for its laptops to reduce the risk of sensitive mobile data going astray
Check Point Software Technologies has announced that the London Borough Of Camden is using the Check Point Full Disk Encryption product to secure confidential data on its entire fleet of 1400 laptops against theft or data leakage.

With such a large fleet of portable computers, many of which where deployed before Camden was unified into a single administrative body in 2006, the council's IT team wanted to ensure that all laptops had strong, mandatory encryption deployed to prevent possible data losses.

"We were keen to take the initiative and proactively protect our data assets, rather than waiting for Government legislation. We had also conducted a penetration test on a laptop with password-protection but without encryption, to see what data could be easily accessed. This convinced us of the need for an encryption solution for our laptop fleet," said Alec Hartopp, ICT Flexible Working Programme Manager for Camden Council.

Following an evaluation of possible solutions, Check Point Full Disk Encryption was chosen for its pre-boot authentication, strong encryption and centralised management. Alec Hartopp reports both roll-out and ongoing management were seamless and easy.

"With the Check Point solution, security is always on and data is encrypted on the fly. This automates the process and means users don't have to make decisions about what data needs protecting - unlike file-based encryption solutions. It's also easy for us to manage centrally, for issues such as forgotten passwords," he added.

Alec Hartopp reports that the encryption solution is a key part of the Council's preparations for connection to Government Connect Secure Extranet (GCSX) later this year.

Juliette Sultan, head of Global Marketing for Check Point said: "An organization is fully secure only when its mobile computers are protected. Check Point encryption products give businesses complete, automated and easy to manage solutions to stop the risk of theft or loss of sensitive data."

Check Point Full Disk Encryption provides automatic real-time encryption of a PC's entire hard drive, that can be configured to meet any organisation's needs. Features and benefits of Check Point Full Disk Encryption include:

* Full-disk encryption to protect lost or stolen data
* Pre-boot authentication requires username and password before the operating system loads, increasing security
* Automatic and transparent operation has minimal effect on end users' productivity
* Centralized management simplifies setup and administration, providing lowest total cost of ownership
* Multi-certified cryptography engine addresses adherence to state and federal privacy laws
* Scalable deployment meets the needs of any size enterprise, business or government agency

Check Point data security products support more end-user platforms than any other solutions in the industry, from Windows, Linux and Mac OS based laptops to Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm and PocketPC based smartphones and PDAs. Encryption technology from Check Point is recognised as a data security leader in the latest Gartner Magic Quadrant for Mobile Data Protection.
