Cyber Battle Takes Place As Part of Cyber Security Challenge
QinetiQ hosted the Network Defence Competition – part of the Cyber Security Challenge UK, at its Malvern site last weekend.

The competition tested a wide range of candidates, from all walks of life, in their ability to protect IT networks from attack in a series of ‘real-life’ scenarios inspired by attacks carried out in the criminal world.

The QinetiQ Competition is run annually as part of the Cyber Security Challenge UK. This is a series of national games and competitions run each year to identify and encourage new talent in order to help meet the urgent need to attract more skilled professionals into the cyber security sector.

Currently in its second year, the Challenge competitions look for the skills and aptitude that employers require. Entrants include sixth form students, undergraduates, post graduates, those those employed both inside and outside of the cyber security industry, all hoping to win a range of career enabling prizes to help them turn their talent into a full time profession.

QinetiQ is supported in delivering this competition by networking provider Cisco.  Cisco has provided a comprehensive range of networking, security, wireless, unified communications and compute technologies to give the teams the most realistic, cutting-edge enterprise IT environment possible. All equipment has been funded by Cisco.

The winners will automatically receive a year’s subscription to the National Skills Academy for IT. This gives them unlimited access to over 1000 online training courses, a 24/7 mentoring service to help with their learning, 240 eBooks, express guides on vendors’ new hardware and software releases and articles from leading IT experts. They will also win a coveted place on The Masterclass – the Challenge’s grand final – held in Bristol on 10th March, where they will combined forces with winners from other Challenge competitions to fight for the title of UK Cyber Security Champion.

Alasdair Rodgers, Managing Director, Security at QinetiQ said: “The competition is a great way to uncover talented IT security professionals of the future and enable them to hone their skills in a highly-realistic environment. The technology provided by Cisco is a crucial part of creating this experience.

Rod Halstead, Managing Director Public Sector, Cisco UKI, said: “Cisco is pleased to be part of this project by donating state-of-the-art technology to QinetiQ. This year the teams will be able to work with applications and virtual desktops hosted on Cisco’s unified computing platform as key tools to protect themselves, and experience video communication through devices such as the Cisco Cius mobile collaboration enterprise tablet. This all adds to ensuring the most authentic scenarios that will test competitors to the limit.”
