Contractor loses sensitive data after decryption

Yosemite Technologies : 27 August, 2008  (Technical Article)
Latest government data loss case proves that encrypting data alone doesn't prevent data losses when entrusting that data to subcontractors along with the encryption keys
The recent news that sensitive data on criminal records has gone missing from a memory stick unencrypted by government contractors has been met with dismay by George Symons, CEO of Yosemite Technologies.

"This is not the government's fault as they provided an encrypted data storage device to their contractors, who then unencrypted and promptly lost another memory disk. Human failure is increasingly the weakest link in an organisation's business processes. In this instance the technology exists to automatically encrypt data as it is sent to storage on removable media like dongles."

Automatic encryption ensures that human failings are removed from the equation and sensitive data that could cause damage if released outside of the organisation is secured at the source.

Symons concluded, "It's now just a matter of educating users that their business issues have effective solutions. Storage of sensitive data need not be taxing with the latest generation of storage and backup solutions incorporating encryption as standard".
