Content filtering from Astaro for Nintendo DSi Browser

Astaro : 29 April, 2009  (Application Story)
Handheld console from Nintendo to use content filtering from Astaro as a cloud-based service for the protection of users
Astaro will use its content filtering technology to deliver an internet security service for the new Nintendo DSi Browser.

The Nintendo DSi Browser can be downloaded onto the Nintendo DSi and offers users mobile internet access. Consumers can then opt into Astaro's internet security service by adjusting their browser settings. Nintendo will use Astaro's content filtering and web security technology to provide additional parental control services to its customers and protect the Internet browsing experience for younger users. This is in addition to the Nintendo DSi built in parental control function which controls access to the Nintendo DSi Browser in the first instance. The Astaro service is capable of blocking over 35 million websites that contain inappropriate or undesirable content.

Laurent Fischer, Managing Director, Marketing & PR at Nintendo of Europe said, "Our approach is based on providing experiences that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Web access enriches how the Nintendo DSi can be used but we understand the need for security parameters. Astaro's service provides a powerful level of support to our users and is a valuable part of the new features within the Nintendo DSi."

Gert Hansen, Chief Security Architect for Astaro, commented, "Our work with Nintendo is a great example of the value of web security. The Nintendo DSi Browser takes our enterprise-class content filtering technology, already used by thousands of businesses, and delivers it in a way that is easy to manage while being fast and unobtrusive for users. The scalability of the service which is being offered is crucial: by hosting the service in the cloud, we can provide a full security service to Nintendo DSi users."

The Astaro service uses the same listing and URL filtering technology as is present in the company's all-in-one web security and unified threat management appliances. When users go online, their browsing activity can be sent through the Astaro service to be checked for links that are unsafe or inappropriate.

Astaro has previously worked with Nintendo on web security as part of its previous Nintendo DS Browser which users could add to their Nintendo DS consoles; the security service is included for free for all Nintendo DSi users as part of its internet access.
