Computer security awareness competition winners announced.

ISC Squared : 12 February, 2008  (Company News)
Anti hacking and cyber safety feature amongst winners of (ISC)2 IT security awareness competition.
(ISC)2 has announced the winners of its Cyber Security Awareness Month contest, where top professionals from around the world submitted security awareness tools to an online repository free to the public.

(ISC)2 -certified members, representing pre-eminent information security experts from corporate, government and academic arenas spanning North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, were invited to post materials that organisations and individuals could download to promote online safety at work or within the community. A total of 118 materials were uploaded to the (ISC)2 Cyber Security Awareness Resource Centre, including templates that can be customised by end users, such as posters, flyers, brochures, presentations and games.

Winners were selected based on a combination of rankings and public downloads of their materials. Each will receive US$1,000 from (ISC)².

The winners are:.

• Boris Loza, CISSP for "Anti-Hacking School, Lessons One and Two" (Canada).
• Hayman Ezzeldin, CISSP for "Backup Your Data!" poster (Germany).
• Jay Schwitzgebel, CISSP-ISSMP for "Consumer Internet Security Awareness on Emerging Security Threats" presentation (US).
• Pedro Verdin Jimenez, CISSP for a presentation on cyber safety and security (in Spanish) (Mexico).
• Nishidhdha Shah, CISSP for "Approach to Information Security" presentation (US).

Mr Ezzeldin commented, "I wanted to be able to give something back to the security community,' says Hayman Ezzeldin, CISSP. 'It's a real challenge to encourage people to care about things like passwords and social engineering, but they need help to take care of themselves, and we as professionals are most successful when they do care. This is for them.'

"Due to the success of the online resource centre, (ISC)2 has decided to build out and enhance the site and keep it operational year-round," said Eddie Zeitler, CISSP, executive director of (ISC)2. "Our members have invaluable expertise and experience to share. The Cyber Security Awareness Resource Centre is an important vehicle to make that knowledge available to a wide audience for the greater cyber good."

Assuring public awareness of cyber security has become an official element of the (ISC)2 mission designed to enhance and support the information security profession. (ISC)2 has alliances with several organisations around the world who are committed to bring cyber security awareness to the public, including Childnet International, SCIPP International and the Information Security Awareness Forum. Over 100 (ISC)2 member volunteers have received training from Childnet International, a charity whose mission is to work with others to help make the Internet a great and safe place for children, to give presentations on Internet safety to 11- to 14 year-old students in the United Kingdom. The program is expected to expand to schools in the US and Asia later this year. SCIPP International, a global non-profit organisation dedicated to providing world-class security awareness training and certificates for end users, has invited Zeitler to sit on their advisory board to provide counsel and exchange ideas between the two organizations. John Colley, CISSP, managing director for (ISC)2 EMEA, represents (ISC)2 as a founding member of the Information Security Awareness Forum, a cross-industry initiative supported by former UK Home Secretary David Blunkett and organised by the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) UK Chapter Advisory Board.

(ISC)2 and its members are also advocates for, participate in and sponsor a number of year-round security-related events throughout the world that support security awareness, including:.

• Safer Internet Days in the EU.
• Clean PC Day in Hong Kong.
• Global Security Week in New Zealand.
• Computer Security Day in the US.
