Comprehensive IT protection for schools.

Equiinet : 03 January, 2008  (New Product)
eSafetyPilot from Equiinet to provide comprehensive protection specifically for schools to counteract common threats including chat rooms, inappropriate content and online gambling.
Equiinet is announcing it is in the final stages of development of a wide-ranging one-stop solution for schools that will combat traditional threats by filtering out viruses, block hackers and stop the viewing of inappropriate websites; ranging to alerting on more recent issues such as cyber-bullying, grooming, online gambling or the use of unmoderated chat rooms or blogs. The combination of eSafetyPilot, sited at individual schools, together with equipment and tools at Local Authorities, Learning Grids, or suitably approved agencies - enables all network content to be captured, replayed and analysed, giving a total picture of in-school network communications. Any activities that violate 'Acceptable Use Policies' can be automatically highlighted and acted on appropriately.

Equiinet has over ten years experience of providing protection against more traditional internet borne threats targeting networks infrastructures and their users - such as those emanating from intrusion and security exploits be they internal or external attacks - scanning and filtering with its SecurePilot: a complete secure gateway designed for UK schools.

This is now complemented by Equiinet's eSafetyPilot, sited at individual schools, it captures and records absolutely all network activity, regardless of communications type or protocol, emanating from within the school to outside services - or vice-versa. Its central collection and collation counterpart - is manned by independent and impartial staff who are outside of the daily operations of individual schools.

"It is vital that educators take all possible steps to minimize dangers of the internet," says Equiinet Managing Director, Keith Baker. "This solution provides a detailed and objective way of identifying and managing issues - removing the burden from schools themselves - freeing up teachers to teach, senior staff to manage and ICT staff to deal with technical networking issues."

Although all keyboard activity, screen content and network activity is monitored transparently - including emails, instant messaging, chat rooms, browser and search engine activity - pupil privacy is maintained since only items that do not meet the agreed Acceptable Use Policies create alerts. Action can then be taken as appropriate, with the big advantages that classroom confrontations are avoided and that clear evidence of misuse will be available.

"This powerful combination in-school data capture functions, coupled with centralised indexing, archiving, replay and comprehensive analysis abilities makes schools' fight against misuses of the internet so much easier." says continues Keith Baker. "Bullying or other undesirable activities are deterred, potential wrong-doers knowing their behaviour will be captured and identified. Victims have the advantage that they do not need to come forward. And all students can be free to use the internet and computer applications responsibly, with clear boundaries in place appropriate to their age groups."
