Certification for Portable Fire Extinguisher Service Now Available from SSAIB

SSAIB : 23 February, 2010  (Company News)
Service Technicians working with portable fire extinguishers can now turn to SSAIB for certification under new BAFE Standard scheme being offered
SSAIB has added a new scheme to its portfolio. The Portable Fire Extinguisher Scheme aims to increase the competence of portable fire extinguisher service technicians working in the field and thus provide end users with an improved and safer service. The scheme is based on compliance with two BAFE (British Approval for Fire Equipment) standards, SP101 and ST104.

Standard SP101 uses as its foundation ISO 9001 and builds on its specific scheme requirements with respect to the operation and functioning of the organisation. ST104 places emphasis on the knowledge and competence of the individual technician rather than the organisation. It is a pre-requisite that the technician requiring registration is employed by an organisation operating under ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems Certification. The combined effect is to provide end users with confidence that the maintenance work they commission is undertaken in a competent and professional manner.

SSAIB certificate companies against the BAFE standards which set out the criteria for the certification. Organisations joining the scheme are provided with a Registered Technician Record which contains a guide to obtaining the BAFE registered technician qualification. The technician is required to demonstrate essential knowledge in a range of areas, including:

* Theory of Fire
* Types of Fire Risk
* Maintenance Procedures
* Provision and Siting of Equipment
* Health and Safety
* Applicable British and International Standards
* Regulatory and Legislative Requirements

Assessment of this knowledge is field based and undertaken by SSAIB's experienced, qualified and independent assessors who have management systems, technical and commercial skills. Successful applicants are entered onto the Register, awarded a BAFE Diploma and issued with an identification card which is valid for three years.
