Centralised Archiving Advised for Coping With Data Explosion

Symantec : 16 February, 2011  (Technical Article)
Symantec comments on the doubling of data demands year on year and the increasing need for centralised archiving requirements
The University of Southern California has calculated that in 2007 the amount of global data had reached 295 exabytes. This is the equivalent of 1.2 billion average hard drives.

Gareth Fraser-King, Product Marketing EMEA at Symantec, said: “Although 295 exabytes is colossal, the accepted principle is that data storage doubles year on year. Therefore it's likely that today, global data is actually closer to 1.8 zetabytes. However, there is really no need for this amount of data given that a huge proportion of it is copied, mirrored and replicated from one system to another. There has been a deluge of data for sometime. The important thing is to make sure we keep on top of the data, ensuring it stays well organised and secure at all times.

“Much of this deluge has been the result of the increase of IT within businesses. Whether it be using smartphones, tablets or the constant emailing office workers do; it all creates data and it all needs to be stored at the companies’ expense. CIO’s can reduce their data footprint by implementing a centralised archiving solution, this not only organises the data, but also helps reduce storage costs as well.”
