Careless administration of access rights leaves companiestest vulnerable.

Innominate Security Technologies : 05 June, 2007  (Technical Article)
Former employees continue to constitute a risk to many companies as lack of housekeeping in disabling access rights is found in many cases.
More than a third of IT professionals can still access their company's network when they leave their current job according to research conducted by Cyber-Ark Software. More than 25 per cent of respondents also knew a former IT colleague who still had access to sensitive networks despite not having been employed by the company recently. The study found that one fifth of companies rarely change their passwords, with seven per cent never altering them, and eight per cent not changing the default manufacturers passwords on critical systems. Adopting a laissez-faire attitude towards network security is the equivalent of leaving the keys in your car door, warns Innominate's CEO, Joachim Fietz.

'Access codes provide the key to the enterprise kingdom and while it is shocking with how little regard they are treated by companies, I am not surprised. The issue is that by becoming complacent with passwords companies are leaving themselves extremely vulnerable,' comments Joachim Fietz, CEO, Innominate. 'Hackers and virus writers commonly break into corporate networks using the manufacturers default administrative password or codes they learned as an employee of the company. To help companies combat this threat Innominate developed its mGuard solution that provides a firewall and can be configured so that only pre-determined PCs or laptops - identified by their MAC address or IP address - can enter the network. While all companies should regularly alter their passwords, mGuard provides an effective second barrier that ensures against the danger of password complacency.'
