BSIA releases guide to IP for the security industry

British Security Industry Association (BSIA) : 17 September, 2007  (Technical Article)
Guide to IP technology addresses increasing trend within the security industry towards its use for video networking and integrating other applications.
With the adoption of Internet Protocol (IP) technology increasingly being used within the security industry, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has launched a guide providing advice in this area for businesses.

IP has already proven to be an effective communication method for alarm systems, access control systems and CCTV systems, giving the user another choice in the type of communications method used.

'When the user requirements are assessed by the consultant/installer, the right type of communications method will be chosen for the specific task," says Alex Carmichael, BSIA Technical Director. "The BSIA user guide provides further independent advice on the uses of IP and therefore allows the user to determine whether IP is an appropriate security solution for them."

The user guide provides basic guidance on what IP is; how it can be used effectively in a security system; and the benefits that the innovative use of IP can bring. The guide also covers considerations such as: infrastructure and internet service providers; capabilities of IP in security applications; how an IP network can be integrated into existing security solutions; and cost.

The guide can be downloaded by visiting the BSIA web site.
