Biometric uses for improved productivity.

RCG Corporation : 01 October, 2007  (Technical Article)
RCG demonstrate case studies of companies which have successfully deployed biometric recognition technology with an improvement in business productivity.
Technology no longer provides businesses with competitive advantage. In fact, it's the pre-requisite to compete and operate in the global, digital economy.
Technologies, particularly Information Technologies (IT) are being used by enterprises, big and small, to improve operational productivity, enhance customer experience, reduce cost and sharpen competitiveness. New technologies such as biometrics and RFID are beginning to gain widespread adoption. These and many other emerging technologies provide greater possibilities for today's organizations to further differentiate themselves and sustain their competitive advantage.

However, mere adoption of technology will not provide real value and impact. It is how an enterprise implement the technologies to accentuate and sustain their unique value propositions that determine competitiveness. The followings are some examples how RCG provides solutions that makes its clients 'special' in comparison to their competitors.

Case 1: Adaptive Technologies at Qube

Qube is an entertainment club, with operations at Lan Kwai Fong, the centre of Hong Kong's nightlife. The entertainment venue business is always focus on providing the best customer experience. However, attaining such objective is not a simple task, especially with the ever demanding guests and their increasing concern on privacy and security. In addressing the security issues, conventional identity check is no longer adequate, as it is often inaccurate; causes inconvenience to customers and worsening the already lengthy queuing time during peak hours.

Specifically tailored to fit Qube's business requirements, RCG developed customized biometric solution, which involved integrated fingerprint and facial authentication for identification. Ensuring security and reducing queuing time, identity of each individual is quickly and accurately identified by scanning their fingerprints at the kiosks located at the entrances. Anticipating potential need to further enhancement, the system is also scalable to accommodate RFID access card for extra layer of security.

In addition to providing pleasant vibe, the system also makes VIP customers feel safe and special, which is a high priority for the club. A face recognition system is installed, which runs at all times to guard the area where only the pre-registered VIP guests are allowed to enter.

RCG further customized the hardware to overcome a common challenge in facial recognition, which is its limitation to perform in poorly lighted environment. RCG's kiosk is equipped with special LED lightings to enable uniform illumination on the person's face, thus facilitate the facial recognition in a more accurate manner.

Customized solutions with real benefits are not seen very often, as hardware customization is not common, mainly due to their operational limitation and financial consideration. As a result, only off-the-shelf hardware and software are used in their solutions and client's needs become a lower priority. However, the implementation at Qube exemplifies RCG's commitment to develop solutions that fit its clients unique requirements and enables them to create sustainable competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Case 2: Technology-enabled Robustness at Beijing International Airport

The new terminal, as part of the Beijing International Airport expansion scheme, is one of the major construction projects in the city, in preparation for the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games 2008. Currently the airport is operating above its capacity of handling 35 million passengers a year; a new terminal has been constructed to increase the capacity for another 43 million passengers, which is more than 1.5 times the current throughput of the very busy Hong Kong International Airport.

Expecting to receive waves of spectators visiting Beijing from around the world, the airport is carefully designed to give each visitor the best impression of the city. The requirement of the luggage management system also reflected similar ambition. With the dedication to provide visitors with the most efficient service, the airport follows closely to the most advance airports in the world and implementing RFID system in their luggage management system.

Understanding the significance of this event and the demand for an efficient reliable system; RCG is pleased to contribute its expertise in addressing this issue. As a result, RCG customized a system that is powered by RFID and barcode technology compatible. After luggages are checked-in, their locations and statuses will be tracked by the system. As luggage tags are scanned at various checkpoints before loading to the plane, the data from the checkpoint will be sent via a wireless network to the central tracking system to enable visibility in the luggage handling process.

The implementation shows RCG's capability in delivering large-scale projects, which provide real benefits to the operator as well as end-users. Air travel passengers experience better, fast and more efficient luggage handling while the airport operator streamlines its operation to provide better service and optimises its resource allocation.

Case 3: Total Employees Management System at Mashreq Bank, Dubai

The Mashreq Bank at Dubai has always realized the potential of security improvement using biometrics for access control and the reduction of administrative workload using an automated report generation system. They have been searching for the appropriate enterprise that is capable and trustworthy to undertake the implementation, until RCG was recommended by one of Mashreq bank's reputable suppliers.

By adopting RCG's i4 Flexi fingerprint recognition device, Mashreq Bank not only improves their access security, the device also function as a more reliable Time and Attendance (T&A) system, as this eliminates the "buddy-punching" practices. The benefits of the solution are more apparent, when a network of fingerprint devices are integrated into a customized Database Software Management (DBSM) system developed by RCG's software team. The system offers saving to Mashreq Bank by automatically generate attendance reports and calculate payrolls of its over 1800 employees, which was performed manually before the installation of the system. RCG did not limit its offering to merely access control, but proposed a total solution for employee access control, attendance / payroll management. The value proposition exceeded customers' expectation. Satisfied with the original implementation, the company is currently in the process of expanding the application to all branches in Dubai.

Reflecting on the cases, more companies are seeking RFID and biometrics to improve their operational efficiency and productivity. With greater competition the global, digital economy, organizations from all over the world are facing similar challenges; consequently, we will witness the emergence of highly capable security solution provider expanding into different industries and regions over the world. Through the featured implementations as described, RCG showcased its capability in providing products and solutions tailored to fit various needs and overcome today's highly complex challenges.

Adopting technology should be a part of the long term company strategy, and the chances of successfully adopting new technology is much better with a partner of whom is willing to understand the unique situation you face and work with you on a continuous basis.
