Be U Mobile enables TWIC compliance at US ports

Cross Match Technologies : 29 May, 2009  (New Product)
Rugged portable biometric identity verification available from Cross Match Technologies in TWIC compliant form for use in US port security operations
Cross Match Technologies is at the forefront of US port operations. Cross Match's Be U Mobile brings handheld, standards-based biometric identity verification to the market, helping to enhance security at the nation's ports.

As of April 15, 2009, maritime workers requiring unescorted access to secure port facilities and vessels regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA), are required to carry a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). The TWIC program mandates that port workers, longshoremen, truckers and other personnel provide biographic and biometric data to enroll in the program. To date, more than one million TWIC cards have been granted with thousands more expected to be issued in the coming months.

Be U Mobile extends existing physical access control (PAC) systems, allowing ports to utilize these devices when authenticating TWIC cards. The wireless solution reads contact and contactless smart ID cards and contains barcode and fingerprint scanners, allowing it to read most forms of identification used in port environments. Making use of software from CoreStreet, Be U Mobile addresses prevailing Maritime Security levels (MARSEC), including TWIC photo validation, CHUID (cardholder unique identifier) number validation, fingerprint authentication and PIN number verification.

'Be U Mobile is a lightweight, easy-to-use mobile solution to help mitigate threats by quickly authenticating individuals accessing our ports,' says Bill Dumont, senior vice-president of worldwide sales at Cross Match. 'The rugged solution is a smart investment for port authorities seeking to quickly comply with federal regulations.'

Regulated facilities such as seaports and other areas overseen by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the US Coast Guard benefit from Be U Mobile's ability to link to the TWIC hotlist server to receive dynamic updates for foolproof identity validation. 'With Be U Mobile, ports have the tools they need to demonstrate compliance with current TWIC requirements,' says Dumont. 'And since the handheld is battery operated and stores the TSA's 'hotlist' locally, it deploys quickly and integrates seamlessly into a port's legacy PAC system. Be.U Mobile is FIPS 201-compliant, so users are well positioned to extend their systems as their security needs evolve.'
