Bank safeguards authentication credentials while using cloud applications by turning to Novell Identity Manager.

Novell : 07 November, 2010  (Application Story)
Using Novell Identity Manager and Novell Access Manager enabled Huntington Bank to confidently leverage cloud applications while safeguarding colleagues' authentication credentials.
Huntington Bank (Huntington) provides full-service commercial and consumer banking services, mortgage banking services, equipment leasing, investment management, trust services, brokerage services, customized insurance service programs and other financial products and services. Its over 600 banking offices are located in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Huntington set out to create a world-class environment for consolidating customer data and presenting a unified customer view to its colleagues. 'The ability to knock down existing silos and present a consistent view improves our ability to service our customers,' said Mark Edson, manager of Enterprise Desktop and Directory Services for Huntington Bank. 'In addition, regulatory mandates are constantly in flux, so we need to continually interpret and implement control changes to ensure compliance. However, merely complying with government regulations does not equate to good risk management. We also must be great custodians of our information assets.'

To that end, the bank sought to employ cloud applications in a secure manner using open standards such as SAML 2.0. 'We decided to use to better serve our customer needs,' said Edson. 'We needed to do this in a secure, seamless manner so our colleagues wouldn't have to log in a second time to access To safeguard data, we needed to establish a federated connection to the cloud. This way, our colleagues' authentication credentials could be securely passed to our cloud provider, but their corporate passwords would never be shared.'

To further improve the service experience, Huntington wanted to make the login process to this cloud provider faster and more secure. 'The most common reason people call our service desk is for password resets,' said Edson. 'To forestall this problem, we set out to enable web single sign-on capabilities with Novell.'

The bank had long relied on Novell Identity Manager to manage more than 12,000 identities across the enterprise. Extending its use to provision and de-provision identities in the cloud was a natural fit. 'Novell Identity Manager is connected with our HR system, so as soon as a new colleague record is created by HR, their access rights to numerous applications are automatically provisioned,' said Edson.

Huntington had roughly 8000 accounts to load into SalesForce. 'It could have taken months to get those accounts created and set up,' said Edson. 'Using Novell Identity Manager, we provisioned all the accounts in one night.'

Huntington leverages the workflow engine in Novell Identity Manager to grant access privileges to, significantly reducing the amount of administrative overhead associated with granting account access and internal rights and privileges within SFDC. 'The same thing occurs with employee termination,' said Edson. 'As soon as HR hits the termination button, access is automatically revoked across all connected systems. This event-based processing model is critical.'

Huntington also chose Novell Access Manager as the secure web single sign-on solution for its cloud-based and enterprise applications. 'Novell Access Manager fit perfectly with our existing identity management program. It provides federated identity management to cloud applications so that we can authenticate our colleagues, without ever sharing their passwords with cloud providers.'

Novell Professional Services played a key role in accelerating time-to-value of the new solution. 'We had a very aggressive schedule to implement Novell Access Manager,' said Edson. 'The joint Novell/Huntington team got the system up and running ahead of schedule.'

Using Novell Identity Manager and Novell Access Manager, Huntington gained a highly secure and efficient solution for managing user identities in and out of the public cloud. 'The incorporation of programmatic events gives us tremendous efficiencies,' said Edson. 'If a colleague moves to a new department, changes a phone number, address, cost center or access privileges, Novell Identity Manager propagates those changes across all connected systems in a matter of seconds. It doesn't get better than that.'

The bank has gained a scalable solution as it continues to take advantage of new cloud applications. 'Novell's identity and access management solutions have given us an incredibly secure way to protect identities in the cloud,' said Edson. 'That's huge. Huntington's ability to adopt new cloud solutions has become far more of a turnkey operation.'

Web single sign-on capabilities have also helped improve service experiences. 'With Novell solutions, our colleagues' main focus is our customer, not our systems,' said Edson. 'Colleagues can quickly access all of a customer's information, without having to log into multiple systems. That's a big plus. We can then spend more of our valuable time addressing our customers' financial needs.'

Ultimately, protecting information assets was one of the greatest benefits. 'Our ability to safeguard our colleague's information assets in the cloud is a market differentiator,' said Edson. 'Novell plays an integral role in helping us achieve these goals.'
