BackupPilot protects school data in Somerset.

Equiinet : 30 October, 2007  (Application Story)
County council standardises on Equiinet BackupPilot for schools in the area for data back up, encryption, remote storage and disaster recovery.
Following successful evaluations in pilot schools, Somerset County Council is now recommending Equiinet's BackupPilot to all its 309 schools. BackupPilot automatically copies all schools' data - including that held on servers and teachers' laptops, PCs and other devices - and saves it both locally and remotely. Copies of system, application and user data are held encrypted in-school on the BackupPilot unit, which enables fast recovery from the local LAN based device in the event of data loss. School data is also automatically and additionally backed up to a remote storage facility providing a further level of protection. To keep the cost of transfer and storage to an absolute minimum the system automatically compresses and de-duplicates data, and transfer - which is carried out using the school's internet link - can be set for times when the internet connection is not otherwise needed: outside of prime eLearning school hours.

After considering a range of solutions Somerset's IT Service Centre (ITSC) deliberately selected BackupPilot as being "comprehensive, flexible and robust enough to satisfy our stringent demands for both reliability and security". Somerset also cited BackupPilot's lack of dependency on tapes as being "critically important in the event of catastrophic failures like fires or flooding", especially given that few sites are able to store tapes securely.

"As technology becomes more and more important to schools, they do need to be safeguarded against data loss," says Equiinet Managing Director, Keith Baker. "Our experience with schools has shown us that by far the best solution is one that is automated. With BackupPilot everything from central servers to teachers' PCs can be regularly backed up without any manual intervention, and when data is lost it can be restored quickly and easily."
