Avoiding the cost of poor weather absenteeism

Network Defence : 12 January, 2010  (Technical Article)
Network Defence advises the use of secure remote access for employees stuck at home during the bad weather in order to avoid losses in productivity whilst maintaining a secure environment
IT and data security specialist Network Defence is advising companies that providing flexible remote working for employees could help them maintain business continuity and avoid the financial cost of 'snow day' absenteeism.

With heavy snowfall currently affecting the majority of the UK it has been estimated that the cost of absenteeism to the economy because of the severe weather conditions could run to billions. Network Defence advises that businesses can prepare for this with a flexible remote working policy, enabling employees to still be productive and continue work, wherever they are.

Dave Beesley, managing director for Network Defence, said: "The number of absent employees caused by the heavy snowfall in the last week has already cost the economy an estimated £600 million a day through lost productivity, according to the Federation of Small Businesses. And with snow predicted for the next few weeks businesses run the risk of losing even more money unless contingency measures are put in place.

"Snow doesn't mean your employees can't work. By setting up remote working for employees staff can securely access their emails and company network from home and have work calls routed to them using an integrated IP telephony system, letting them operate as effectively from home as they would from their office. Remote working is quick and easy to set up and gives businesses and staff flexibility when it is most needed, minimising the impacts of even the worst weather conditions on the business."

Network Defence provides businesses with easy to manage and cost-effective secure remote access solutions. Using strong authentication and cryptography technology, the solutions ensure sensitive business data remains secure, providing complete confidentiality for transmitted information and protecting mobile computing devices against theft or data loss.
