Authentication experts warn of on-line shopping vigilance

Gridsure : 16 December, 2008  (Technical Article)
GrIDsure is warning of increased on-line fraud potential with this holiday season seeing large increases in on-line consumer spending
Although the high street has been hit by the recent economic turmoil, the same cannot be said for online shopping. Last Monday, dubbed 'Mega Monday', was the biggest online shopping day of the year, with £320 million spent online and industry experts predicting that today's figure will be even higher.

With 77 percent of shoppers planning to do at least half their festive shopping online, an increase of 21 percent from last year, authentication expert GrIDsure is warning consumers to be extra vigilant and is calling for the industry to take more notice in addressing online fraud.

Jonathan Craymer, GrIDsure chairman said: "During the festive period consumers want and need access to their money without fear of a thief obtaining their precious card or login details. With online shopping becoming more and more popular year on year, it's time the industry got its act together and delivered more effective protection for consumers who do their bit by putting their faith in online retail.'

"Chip and PIN addressed a need on the high street and has been successful in reducing fraud over the counter, but with record amounts being spent online, isn't it time to make online shopping as safe? In terms of authentication, online has always come second to the high street, but with consumers flocking to their PCs it's time online security for consumers and their hard-earned cash was made a priority - not an afterthought. We urge consumers to be extra vigilant online at this crucial time of year."
