ATM Surveillance Pitfalls And Their Solution

Nanjing Yuantuo Tech : 02 July, 2010  (Technical Article)
Nanjing Yuantuo identifies some of the main security issues which still surround Automatic Teller Machine security and offers suggestions for improving ATM surveillance
ATMs are becoming more and more widely used in the financial industry. Many businesses that need to transact with banks can now achieve this using an ATM for Self-service Banking. Depositors can deposit, withdraw or transfer money between accounts or do self-service paying on the ATM through the use of their bank card. ATMs brings much convenience to our lives.

However, Self-service Banking is a business place that is unattended and provides 24-hour financial services. The relevant equipment and the safety of transaction processes have always been important work of the security department of banks. Meanwhile, since ATMs are widely used in finance, some problems only gradually come to the surface. More and more account disputes and ATM financial crimes are becoming apparent. Therefore, to protect the safe using of ATMs and reduce the disputes between banks and customers as well as protecting customers and bank benefits and prevent all kinds of crimes on ATM, these problems need to be urgently addressed.

Certain defects of ATM surveillance systems have come to the fore. The following are also some of the weaknesses that the surveillance industry needs to improve.

1 The area that the monitoring covers is not broad enough. The front image can only direct at a single criminal without covering other criminal associates. Meanwhile, it lacks monitoring of the access control area and the surrounding environment.

Solution: to adopt five-way surveillance to enhance the monitoring of access control and image area.

2 When encountering an emergency, the depositor always feels helpless and doesn't know how to deal with it.

Solution: To add a concealed emergency button on the ATM board so that the customer can press it to ask for help at any time.

3 Monitoring systems are retrospective which means that they can't detect and deal with problems in real time.

Solution: Install SMS alarm modules. In this way, emergencies can be dealt with immediately after the warning happens in order to avoid severe losses.

4 Monitoring is ineffective when the power is lost.

Solution: Install host state monitor with dry-cell batteries.

5 The overlay card number recording reveals the card information of the clients and thus leads to insider crimes.

Solution: Use a card catcher with a mask bit to avoid the security problems caused by revealing the number on recordings.

6 Monitoring can cause numerous invalid recordings which prevent the video recorder from recording the most effective footage.

Solution: A human activity detector can start human body proximity trigger recording.

7 The screen is not large enough.
Solution: Use an 8-inch or larger digital LCD screen.

8 Poor night recording.
Solution: Install human activity fill-light equipment. When operating the ATM, the fill light should start.
