Annual Information Security Survey findings

MIS Training Institute : 09 June, 2009  (Technical Article)
NetWitness and MIS Training Institute have released the results of their annual IT security survey with the overwhelming number of respondents having concerns about data theft
MIS Training Institute has recently run an Annual Information Security Survey in association with NetWitness. The survey forms part of the CISO Executive Summit & Roundtable events taking place in Lisbon and Oman. The short survey was designed to identify the latest challenges, priorities, investments and management decisions faced by information security leaders today.

The full survey report is available from MIS Training Institute.

* 97% of respondents are either 'concerned' or 'very concerned' about data breaches and data theft.
* 80% of respondents believed that 'insiders' were the greatest human threat to their data

Although most data is kept on mainframes or windows/unix based servers (82%), there is still a surprising amount residing on end user workstations or laptops. There is therefore a consequent high value placed on discovering where sensitive data is being kept and what security implications are related to this.

Surprisingly, security spending drivers are less focussed with day to day operations accounting for a quarter of predicted spending, another quarter on governance and compliance and 18% on advanced threat and vulnerability management.
