Android malware and theft prevention

ESET : 28 October, 2011  (New Product)
Mobile Security for Android from ESET provides malware protection for smartphones as well as ant-theft features
Android malware and theft prevention
ESET has launched ESET Mobile Security for Android, an innovative new security solution which offers advanced protection against the emerging threats targeting the Android platform.

Android is rapidly becoming the market leader operating system for smartphone users, however as it grows in popularity it increases to attract the attention of the maliciously minded. It is therefore vital that the correct precautions are taken to ensure the data stored on devices is sufficiently protected. However, findings from a recent survey looking into the attitudes of 2,000 consumers towards viruses on their smartphones revealed that many consumers are not even aware that they are being targeted by hackers.

The survey, commissioned by ESET UK, revealed that 81 per cent of consumers do not have any antivirus software installed on their smartphone and that 31 per cent of consumers don’t even know their smartphone is at risk of being targeted by hackers. Other findings revealed that nine out of ten people use their phone to browse the Internet, 58 per cent regularly open email attachments on their phone and 21 per cent use their phone for Internet banking.

“The smartphone is increasingly being used as a primary point of connection to the Internet and more and more people are using their devices to carry out sensitive tasks such as online shopping and mobile banking. However, worryingly people are not recognising that smartphone devices are at just as much risk of being targeted by hackers as desktop PCs are. I would always advise users carrying out such transactions to install an antivirus solution on their device as attacks on smartphones are increasing and they are becoming a very easy, yet valuable, target for hackers,” said Quinton Watts, VP of marketing at ESET UK.

ESET’s Mobile Security for Android provides users with improved threat protection, anti-spam and anti-theft, ensuring that everything stored and accessed on the smartphone is fully protected. The solution has been specially engineered for mobile operating systems so it will run smoothly in the background without slowing the device down.

ESET Mobile Security for Android brings several new useful features which will help users protect their handheld devices, including:

Features of ESET Mobile Security for Android:

* Protection from Threats – All applications, files, folders and SD memory cards are continually scanned for emerging threats, including hidden files and processes.

* SMS/MMS Antispam – Define trustworthy contacts via customisable black- or whitelist or simply block message traffic from unknown numbers.

* Call Intercept – Block unwanted calls in both directions – incoming and outgoing. This is a powerful tool especially suitable for parents to control their children’s phone bills.

* Security Audit with Built-in Task Manager – Stay informed about all vital phone functions, including battery life, free disk space, running processes, Bluetooth and device visibility. Take action on the spot to reduce your risk profile

Anti-theft System

* Multiple layers of protection that allow you to maintain control over phone-stored data even in the event of device loss or theft.

* SIM Matching – In case of an unauthorised SIM card insertion, you or your trusted contact are automatically notified by a text message containing the IMSI and telephone number, so you can locate the perpetrators.

* Remote Lock – Allows you to block the phone remotely to prevent unauthorised access to your data.

* GPS Localisation – Locate your lost or stolen phone by a remote command (only for Android OS).

* Remote Wipe – As the last instance of protecting your privacy, delete all phone-stored data remotely using an SMS command. Wipe clean all your contacts, messages and memory cards
