ADT continues to invest in graduate training programmes

ADT Fire And Security : 04 December, 2009  (Company News)
With the first batch of graduate trainees at ADT Fire and Security having moved into permanent positions, the company is looking forward to the next recruiting round in 2010
This autumn ADT, a European provider of electronic fire and security solutions, celebrated the company's first graduate trainees moving into permanent positions after their 18 month induction programme. Despite the challenging economic climate, ADT has remained committed to bringing new talent into the fire and security industry through its graduate scheme. The company plans to take on a further six new graduates in 2010.

The graduate scheme, which has been focused within the ADT Integrated Solutions Group part of the business, has allowed the five people, mainly from electrical engineering backgrounds, to learn a wide variety of skills from both colleagues and external experts. The training programme also provided them with a unique opportunity to rotate between departments, gaining experience of surveying, design, computer aided design (CAD) and project management roles.

Russell Downing, Operations Director for ADT's Integrated Solutions Group (South), says: "We are delighted with the success of our first graduate trainee scheme. We felt it was vital to maintain our commitment to growing our own new talent despite the pressures on our business due to the global economic climate, so I am delighted that internal feedback and customer reaction to the way our graduates have performed has been excellent".

"This autumn, each of our graduates will be assigned a permanent role according to their strengths, career aspirations and the needs of our business. We expect them to progress quickly and help to deliver excellent business results through the energy and enthusiasm they have shown over the past 18 months."

To ensure their continued development, the graduates will be enrolled on to ADT's management development training programme and encouraged to work towards chartered engineer status with the relevant institution.

James Lacy is 27 and joined ADT after graduating from the University of Reading with a Masters of Engineering (MEng). He said: "The graduate programme has been a fantastic opportunity to learn about the different aspects of fire and security industry and I'm really looking forward to my next role. ADT is the leading company in this sector, employing over 1,700 specialist engineers, so I know it offers great career development potential. My mentors have been incredibly helpful and hard work certainly doesn't go unnoticed within the company!"

Engineering graduate Robert Peters explained why he chose to join ADT: "Fire and security is becoming an important sector in response to increasing demands for protection against the evolving risks faced by people and businesses. The industry has been changing quickly over the past few years especially with advancements in new technology and this is what really excited me about a career with ADT. It's a fast moving business and ADT provides an essential service to its customers. There is a role for young people like me in helping carry the business forward and creating growth for the future."

Over the next three years, ADT plans to recruit a further six graduates from university engineering courses. The company is committed to its graduate programme as a key part of the its talent management strategy to ensure it remains at the forefront of the industry.
