Ad-hijacking Trojans without using toolbars.

Finjan Software : 21 December, 2007  (Technical Article)
Fewer subscribers to toolbars have led to hackers exploiting other methods of hijacking ads which don't rely on toolbar technology warns Finjan.
Finjan warns that ad-hijacking trojans are a new version of the well-known ad-hijacking methods used by browser toolbar providers to generate revenue few years ago. The company's warning comes as a new trojan - Trojan.Qgist.WU - has surfaced in the wild.

'Web advert hijacking is actually nothing new - our researchers have noticed a similar technique in the past where Browser's toolbars installed by users, had a similar effect,' said Finjan's CTO, Yuval Ben-Itzhak,

According to Ben-Itzhak, the new ad-hijacking trojan is a result of less people installing Browser toolbars, resulting in cybercriminals turning to drive-by infections that do not require users' intervention to install these trojans.

'This malware may have serious ramifications for operators of smaller websites, whose revenue stream could be crippled by this type of trojan."
