Access Assurance For 20,000 Healthcare Employees

Courion : 06 April, 2010  (Application Story)
Courion is supplying Clarian Health with automatic password management and access control system for streamlining the health care provider's process for password resets and managing accounts
Courion has announced that Clarian Health has selected Courion's Access Assurance Suite to improve service and efficiency for its 20,000 employees with automated password management and user provisioning capabilities.

Named among the "Best Hospitals in America," by US News & World Report for five consecutive years, Clarian Health is comprised of multiple hospitals and health centres throughout the state and maintains a strong partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Courion's Access Assurance Suite will allow Clarian to automate access management by replacing time-consuming manual processes for resetting passwords, setting up new user accounts and deprovisioning old accounts. Courion will be integrated with Cerner - a core business application used at Clarian to manage clinical and financial outcomes.

After a thorough internal review, Clarian found that information technology (IT) staff would spend an average of 30 minutes per person setting up accounts for each new employee, and that approximately 30 percent of all help desk calls were related to a password reset.

"As the state's largest health care system, it's important we have the right tools in place so both new and existing employees can be productive and work as effectively as possible," said Brian Quick, Director of Information Services at Clarian Health. "It's also important that we are fiscally responsible. If we maintain the status quo, the value of lost time with new account set-ups and password resets will amount to millions of dollars over the coming years."

"Clarian Health took a hard look at their current processes and the effect they are having on their employees, from the IT administrator to the new employee who doesn't have the proper tools, and decided to make a change," said Chris Sullivan, vice president of customer solutions at Courion.

"With Courion, they will be able to implement an automated process that is less time consuming and drastically improves the efficiencies within their organization in a scalable way as they continue to grow."

Courion's Access Assurance Suite will be deployed throughout Clarian Health, replacing its existing Web and paper-based request systems. Clarian Health selected Courion's solution after evaluating numerous other identity and access management vendors and speaking with Courion customers. Clarian was attracted to Courion's ease of deployment and the fact that it could help achieve ROI in a short amount of time. Courion's extensive library of connectors was also a major consideration in the decision.

"Identity management projects and healthcare environments are complex," said Quick. "We were impressed by the amount of time the Courion team spent in evaluating our challenges and coming up with an adequate solution to address them."
