Aberdeen University transports sensitive data on SafeSticks

Blockmaster : 11 November, 2009  (Application Story)
SafeStick USB flash sticks from BlockMaster with SafeConsole Management Console are being supplied to the University of Aberdeen for ensuring safe transport and storage of mobile sensitive data
BlockMaster, a provider of secure USB flash drives, will supply the University of Aberdeen with over 200 SafeSticks to protect information transported by staff, as well as SafeConsole to enable central management of the devices.

Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is the fifth oldest University in the UK and boasts four Nobel Prize Winners. Currently it has over 3,000 staff, 14,000 students and a community representing 120,000 nationalities. Teaching is organised in three colleges: College of Life Sciences & Medicine, College of Physical Sciences, and College of Arts and Social Sciences. The University has a strong track record in commercialising research with excellent results in the last national research assessment exercise (RAE) — with over 400 patents pending and 16 spin-off companies and recently rising to 129th in the world times higher list of Universities.

The University has deployed the SafeSticks amongst its admin, research and full-time staff members to enable them to benefit from mobile working without the concern of data loss exposing sensitive information or disrupting operations. It has also deployed SafeConsole, BlockMaster's web based management solution, to manage, audit and rest passwords. Both products have been deployed through Softek, a leading IT Security, Storage and Archiving Solutions Distributor and SBL, a trusted specialist in the independent and value added provision of Information Assurance solutions, services and products.

Brian Henderson, Head of Service Delivery, Aberdeen University comments: "We looked at many providers in the security market to protect portable information, but found their solutions to be cumbersome and expensive. Following thorough product testing we were impressed with the military graded encryption and focus on ease-of-use, which meant that BlockMaster was the right partner for us.

Henderson continues: "The SafeStick and SafeConsole have been invaluable for us. We recently had a member of staff forget their password and in a normal situation they would have just reached for a new device, however, within five minutes we reset the SafeStick and restored all the data on it, saving us so much time and hassle."

James Baker, Senior Account Manager, Softek concludes: "Universities are fast paced environments that are constantly striving to provide the best resources for staff and students and technology can play a critical role in helping achieve this by improving efficiencies. It's great to see the University of Aberdeen leading the way with the adoption of secure USBs and we hope this sets the tone for other Universities to be proactive with portable device security."

Adoption of the SafeSticks has gone so well that the University is currently looking at deploying 8GB and 32GB drives to enable staff to store bigger files and rich media content, such as images and videos.
