The growth of UK public space CCTV in the 1990s created a demand for knowledge and experience to maximise the benefits to the public of the significant investments being made in this area at that time. This led to the establishment of the CCTV User Group as a means of sharing information and representing the views of the mostly public sector users of CCTV. The CCTV User Group provides opportunities for users to meet and share their experiences, and there is also a membership category for organisations who provide products and services to the users. Information and experiences within the CCTV User Group are shared by means of conferences, seminars, newsletters and discussion forums.
Bold joined the CCTV User Group in 2003 as many of our clients have responsibility for both public space video surveillance as well as security monitoring. These clients have found there is excellent synergy between the two activities particularly at a time when budgets are tight. While control room personnel costs tend to comprise the major overhead in a monitoring centre, in many cases they are not revenue generative. Whereas intruder, fire and personal attack monitoring can generate significant additional revenue, defray internal costs and help achieve a higher overall level of service. For example, when an intruder alarm is received within an area where there is public space CCTV, both systems can be deployed, providing intelligence, verification and a faster and more effective response.
As control rooms become more complex, subject to increasing regulation and are expected to deliver more, the need for integrated systems covering a range of disciplines becomes more apparent.
