Bradford Council has upgraded its fire and intruder alarm signalling to BoldNet IP. Uncertainty about the future of PSTN and the significant costs generated by external phone lines led to a review of the traditional digital communicator and dual-path systems in use. The answer was found within their own council-wide IP network.

Already recognising the benefits of monitoring CCTV on their network, Bradford discovered that not only would the move to IP alarm signalling have cost advantages but also provide the additional benefit of a secure, polled and managed service with up to Grade 3 alarm signalling. Dispensing with the need to wait for dedicated phone lines to be installed provided further incentive as was the avoidance of ongoing connection charges. The BoldNet IP solution is already supported in commercial ARCs as well as being widely used in the public sector - local authorities, universities and police - and banking and retail. Supporting both public internet and private networks, BoldNet is increasingly viewed as the answer to the challenges raised by the eventual demise of copper networks.

Bold was able to offer a menu of IP solutions, including GPRS back up, to cater for all the Council's alarm signalling needs. Bold's ARC technicians installed the control room receiving equipment, linking it to the existing Gemini alarm management system. Installation of the transmitters is very straightforward for anyone who has experience of installing digital communicators and this was carried out by Bradford's own alarm installers. Following their initial success with the solution, Bradford now plan to roll-out BoldNet IP transmitters council-wide.

Phil Holmes, of Bradford Council, commented, "BoldNet was chosen as it offered a simple way of reducing costs, at the same time as improving the integrity and security of our alarm transmission. Bold Communications provided our original security management system and we recently upgraded to their new Gemini platform. This means that we can manage a range of different manufacturers' security products and transmission methods. So, on top of the benefits of using BoldNet IP for the alarm signalling, we had the comfort of working with an experienced supplier who we know as an alarm communications and management specialist."
